Do You Have to Be Gifted Your First Tarot Deck?

Updated: Sep 27

One of the most common things people hear when they first become interested in tarot is that their first deck has to be gifted to them. It’s one of those bits of folklore that gets repeated so often it starts to sound like a rule.
It isn’t.
You can absolutely buy your own tarot deck, and honestly, there is something really meaningful about choosing one for yourself. Tarot is so visual and personal that the artwork matters. The symbolism matters. The way the cards feel in your hands matters.
Some decks are soft and dreamy, some are dark and dramatic, and some lean heavily into astrology, nature, mythology, folklore, or traditional Rider-Waite imagery. The deck you keep coming back to, the one that catches your attention and makes you want to look at every card, is probably a pretty good place to start.
Of course, being gifted a deck can be special too. A gifted deck may carry sentimental meaning because of the person who gave it to you or the point in your life when you received it. That can make the deck feel deeply personal.
But that doesn’t make a deck you bought yourself any less meaningful.
What matters more than how the deck came into your life is whether you feel connected to it.
Do you like the artwork? Do the images make sense to you? Do the symbols make you curious? Do you enjoy using it? Those things matter far more than whether someone else handed it to you.
And yes, you can own more than one deck. A lot of people do. Different decks can have very different personalities. You might have one that feels comforting, one you use when you want a very direct answer, and another that you mostly bought because it was too beautiful to leave behind.
The same goes for cleansing a new deck. Some people like to shuffle it thoroughly, leave it under moonlight, place a crystal on it, pass it through incense smoke, knock on the deck, or simply sit and look through every card before using it. Other people open the box and start reading immediately.
There is no single correct way to begin.
Tarot is a practice you build a relationship with over time. You learn the cards, learn how you interpret them, and learn what works for you.
So no, you do not have to wait for someone to gift you your first tarot deck.
If you find one you love, buy it.
That might be the beginning of the relationship.
