You do not need a complicated altar or a shopping list to work with the moon. A notebook, a few minutes, and some honesty with yourself will do just fine.

Here’s one small thing to try during each phase. Pick the ones you like and ignore the rest.

New moon: Name it.Write down one thing you want to invite into your life. Underneath it, write one action you can take to help it happen. Keep the paper somewhere you’ll see it.

Waxing crescent: Begin.Do that action, even if you only have ten minutes. Starting counts. You don’t have to wait until you feel completely ready.

First quarter: Face the obstacle.Ask yourself, “What’s getting in my way?” Write the honest answer, then choose one way around it. Sometimes the magic is making the phone call you’ve been putting off.

Waxing gibbous: Make an adjustment.Look back at your new moon intention. Does it still fit? Change the plan if you need to. An intention is a direction, not a contract.

Full moon: Celebrate what’s visible.Step outside and look up if the sky allows it. Name three things you’ve done well lately. You can light a candle, pour a cup of tea, or just say them out loud.

Waning gibbous: Share something.Give someone a sincere thank-you, pass along something useful, or offer a little help. Let the good you’ve gathered move beyond you.

Last quarter: Clear something out.Choose one thing that’s taking more than it gives: an old obligation, a pile on your desk, or a story you keep telling yourself. Take one concrete step toward letting it go.

Waning crescent: Leave yourself alone for a minute.Rest. Seriously. Put down the list. Take a bath, go to bed early, or sit with your chicken and do absolutely nothing productive.

Then the new moon comes around and you can begin again. There is no penalty for skipping a phase—or several. The point is to have a rhythm you can return to when it helps.
